Case Studies

Real Projects. Proven Results

At Swift Electronics, we don’t just build electronics—we build solutions that perform in the real world. Our case studies highlight the diverse range of industries, challenges, and technologies we’ve worked with, from rapid prototyping and PCB assembly to full product integration and sensor development.

Whether it’s a one-off proof of concept or a scalable production-ready system, our clients trust us to deliver precise, reliable, and cost-effective electronic assemblies—on time and to specification.

Each case study offers a behind-the-scenes look at how we approach problems, collaborate with clients, and turn complex requirements into working products.

Discover how we’ve helped customers with:

  • Custom PCB design and surface mount assembly
  • Sensor integration and environmental monitoring solutions
  • Industrial control modules and automation hardware
  • Cable harnesses and rugged enclosures for harsh environments
  • Rapid prototyping for trade shows and investor demos

Case Study: Urgent Educational Robot Batch Build

Client: Roamer Robotics
Industry: Educational Robotics
Project Type: Full Box Build Project
Timeline: 4 Weeks

Services Provided:

  • Provide storage space for free issue stock
  • Interpreting customer data
  • PCB purchasing
  • Surface mount & through-hole assembly
  • Programming assembled pcb’s
  • Full box build of robots
  • Functional testing of robots
  • Serialise label and production pack

Overview
Roamer approached Swift Electronics Gateshead with an urgent request: to produce a batch of 60 educational robots in less than a month destined for a school in Miami USA.

Challenge

  • Tight 4-week deadline for complete hardware delivery
  • No familiarity with the assembly or Programming
  • Mixed technology assembly (SMT & through-hole)
  • Efficient Staff training absolutely essential

Our Solution

Initial Logistics:
Following on from initial meetings and feasibility of meeting delivery date both parties agreed to Swift taking on this product. First stage was procuring various printed circuit boards / stencils and receiving / cataloguing pallets of raw materials.

Surface Mount PCB Assembly:
To save time and reduce cost we grouped the various pcb’s onto mixed panels so at least one full set of boards were built per pass on our pick and place machine. Only 1 stencil was needed.

Assembly:
After the initial assembly was complete through our pick and place and Reflow oven  through-hole components were hand-soldered and finally quality checked. We also fabricated a custom cable assembly to allow for connection to the robots input output ports.

Programming:
The robots individual pcb’s required their Microchip PIC family processors programming. Custom cable / programming interfaces were made to allow this to be undertaken.

Testing:
All pcb’s underwent simple functional testing before final robot assembly. Once the robots were complete then testing began with multiple commands to test the units ability to take commands via its keypad and act on them. Audio and maneuverability checks were completed before the units were prepared for  Roamer to perform their own final test before shipping.

Completion:
60 fully working units – were made available – in just under 4 weeks, giving the client ample time to ship to the USA.

Results

  • Successful new product take on
  • Positive customer feedback led to a follow-on order of 20 units
  • Media coverage provided unexpected Kudos
  • Ongoing partnership with Roamer, we have just completed our second order.
